Slumping Cardinals, Umpires Getting To La Russa

Aug 31, 2014 8:29 PM

Madison Bumgarner pitched into the eighth inning and the Giants got home runs from Pablo Sandoval and Aubrey Huff, sending the Cardinals to their season-worst fifth straight loss with a 6-3 victory on Friday night. The slump is getting to Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, who complained about home plate umpire Gary Cederstrom?s calls in the ninth inning while Brian Wilson was finishing for his 35th save in 38 chances. ?You can go ahead and fine me, I don?t care,? La Russa said. ?There were several strikes, a guy as good as Brian Wilson, he doesn?t need. Who knows how that inning would have been??

Twins Beat Rays As Pop-Up Hits Catwalk

Sep 17, 2014 10:39 PM

The Twins defeated the Rays 8-6 on Thursday night thanks to a pop-up off the bat of Jason Kubel that hit the catwalk at Tropicana Field. The pop-up fell behind the pitcher's mound for what was the go-ahead single in the top of the ninth inning. "I'll take it," Kubel said. "Get a run in, that's all that matters. Anyway it works. I'm happy with that." Tampa Bay had scored six runs in the eighth inning to rally before Minnesota's own rally. "At the last second, at the top, it hit the catwalk and dropped straight down," shortstop Jason Bartlett said. "Reid and I were both at the edge of the dirt right when it hit so I don't think anybody had a chance."
